Originally, these necklaces were worn by pregnant women as protective amulets to safeguard both mother and child. The pendant, typically worn on a long chain so that it rests near the mother’s belly, contains a tiny metal ball or beads that produce a gentle chime when it moves. This sound is believed to summon the wearer’s guardian angel, providing protection and a sense of calm for both the mother and her baby.

In Mayan culture, each harmony ball is considered unique to the wearer and shouldn’t be shared, as it symbolically connects the wearer to their guardian angel. Many believe that the soothing chime of the necklace creates a familiar and comforting sound for the baby both before and after birth.
